ADVANCED LANGUAGE AND CULTURE for B2/C1 students

 This course is aimed at teachers and language learners with a level of English between B2 and C2. It will give you the confidence and familiarity with current issues, media representations, stereotypes, cultural and political figures and recent events in Britain. The focus is largely on modern culture although there is also some historical content too. Material and tasks are more adult and appropriate for university-level students or simply for your own pleasure and language learning! The course combines discussions, lectures, different media and visits within London on the connected themes 

 Course content is divided by week. We offer a choice of topics each week to provide some flexibility, and we will provide a questionnaire for participants before you arrive so you can express preferences or make requests, which we will try to incorporate into the course where there is agreement between participants.

•  Women in UK society 
• Comedy and Stand-up

• Housing and regeneration 
• Family 
• Literature 
• Health and the Health service 
• Drinking and drug culture 
• Youth issues  

 After this course, participants will: 

• be more comfortable in their knowledge of contemporary UK culture 
• be better able to deal with cultural references in conversation
• be more able to understand colloquial language 
• be aware of a variety of internet resources and writers for study beyond the course 
• go away with some material they can use in adult or university classes 
• know London better 

 All participants can receive a Lexical Lab attendance certificate stating title of course and number of hours 

•  I am a teacher or learner with English between B2 and C2 level  
• I am primarily interested in learning more about UK culture and some related language  
• I am happy to get some tips and materials for my class, but that’s not my main goal 
• I am happy to have lectures and workshops – not a pure language focus
